Archived: Early season odds to win the Stanley Cup
November 28, 2018
A quarter of the way through the NHL regular season, oddsmakers are starting to get a better idea of who will be hoisting the Stanley Cup in June. It’s a long season and a lot could change between now and then, but we are far enough along to have an idea of which teams were ranked too high before the puck was dropped in October, and the ones that too many bettors were sleeping on.
The Tampa Bay Lightning had the best odds before the season at 8/1 and have lived up to those expectations by holding down the top spot in the Eastern Conference. They’re joined at the top of the currents list of favorites with the Toronto Maple Leafs and the Western Conference leading Nashville Predators.
Despite an awful start for the Pittsburgh Penguins (tied for the second fewest points in their conference), their odds haven’t taken much of a hit yet. They’ve dropped from 10/1 when the season started to 12/1 currently. Winning two of the last three Stanley Cups and having Sidney Crosby on your team will do that for you.
The two biggest risers so far are the San Jose Sharks and the Minnesota Wild, while the Edmonton Oilers are the biggest fallers dropping from 20/1 to 60/1.
Despite an extremely strong start to the season, the Buffalo Sabres, tied with Toronto for the second most points in the East, still haven’t convinced oddsmakers. They are still towards the bottom of the odds list at 60/1.
